Good crews break less; nobody breaks nothing, forever. The difference between a claim that gets paid and a grievance that goes nowhere is almost always paperwork — most of it created in about ten minutes around delivery day. Here is the whole process, in order.
Before the move: two photos and one decision
Photograph what you would grieve — electronics powered on, furniture corners, anything already scratched. Time-stamped phone photos settle he-said-she-said before it starts.
And make the valuation decision when you book, not on move day: released value pays by the pound; full value protection repairs or replaces. The difference in one read. It is the single choice that most determines what a claim is worth.
At delivery: the ten minutes that decide everything
Check items in as they come off the truck. When something looks wrong, say so then and write it on the delivery paperwork before the crew leaves. A note made at delivery is nearly impossible to dispute; the same damage reported three weeks later invites the question of what happened in between.
Signing the inventory does not waive your rights — federal rules protect later-discovered damage — but noted-at-delivery is the strongest position there is.
Filing the claim
A real claim is written, not a phone call: what was damaged, when, and the dollar amount you are claiming, with your photos attached. Send it to the mover and keep a copy.
On interstate moves, federal rules give you nine months from delivery to file. The mover must acknowledge the claim within thirty days and resolve it — pay, decline, or make an offer — within a hundred and twenty. For moves within New Jersey, file promptly in writing; if a licensed mover will not respond, the state’s Division of Consumer Affairs takes complaints against its licensees seriously.
Where we stand
Our crews pad and inventory because prevention is cheaper than any claim — but when something does go wrong, the office handles it directly. No claims portal, no voicemail maze: the family whose name is on the truck is the one signing the check.
